Definition
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:
- Protecting children and young people from maltreatment
- Preventing the impairment of their health or development
- Ensuring that they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
- Enabling them to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully
Our Safeguarding Commitment
At Brannel School we are committed to ensuring that our students and staff are protected from abuse and harm. We have a culture of safeguarding that supports effective arrangements to:
- Identify students who may need early help or who are at risk of neglect, abuse, grooming or exploitation
- Help students reduce their risk of harm by securing the support they need, or referring in a timely way to those who have the expertise to help
- Manage safe recruitment and allegations about adults who may be a risk to students
We have a comprehensive Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and associated procedures in place to ensure that safeguarding issues are dealt with efficiently and appropriately. This can be found on the School Policies page of this website.
All staff, including our support staff, visitors, and volunteers are made aware of our procedures. Training of all staff is updated each year. The full policy should be read by every member of teaching and non-teaching staff and will be circulated at the beginning of each academic year.
Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will always ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with their parents/carers first, unless there is reason to believe that this is not in the student’s best interests.
Who to Contact to Make a Disclosure
If you have a concern about a child, particularly if you think the child may be suffering or at risk of suffering harm, it is your responsibility to share the information promptly with our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead or, in their absence, a member of our safeguarding team:
